    Description

Up for sale is this incredible AM-8A TRA-1 RF radio signal power Amplifier. You will never see another one of these as clean as this one. It has been tested (although not fully tested) and seems to be working well. You will have to supply your own cables, etc because I had two of these with only enough cables for one. And the other one already sold. But the cables are easily obtainable. It also comes with a Philco Sierra power meter.
    Description
This is the AM-8A/TRA-1 RF amplifier that was (is) part of the AN/TRC-1 tactical military field radio.
The amplifier is in very good condition, completely original and unmolested. Both 4E27 tubes are present and also in good condition. You will have a hard time finding a nicer example of this amplifier.
The TRC-1 radio installation (of which this AM-8A amplifier is a part), was intended to link military outpost with each other on the WWII battlefield, through a full duplex multiplexed VHF link. In this way, it was possible to maintain four full-duplex telephony channels through a single VHF radio link. The modulation method used was wideband FM on which four subcarriers were multiplexed, very advanced for the time. (The method of subcarrier multiplexing was used all the way into the 1990s for telephony, after which it was replaced by digital packet switching. It is STILL used today for FM stereo broadcasting, albeit for only 2 channels). The AN/TRC-1 radio was introduced at the second half of WWII, was extensively used in Korea, and all the way into the 1960s. NATO allies have used the AN/TRC-1 radio up to the end of the Seventies.
In order to increase the link robustness, the AM-8A amplifier that is being sold here (which is part of the TRC-1 installation) was sometimes used, to boost the signal coming from the T-14A/TRC-1 transmitter from 40 watts to about 200 watts. Frequency band used was 70 MHz to 100 MHz.
This means the two 4E27 tubes present in this AM-8A amplifier were very lightly used, because a single 4E27 is capable of more than 300 watts alone.
If you want to know more of the AM-8A amplifier as well as the TRC-1 radio installation as a whole, do a Google search for “TM 11-2601” (quotes included). This will take you to the RadioNerds web site, where you can download the complete TRC-1 military manual (including this AM-8 amplifier) in excellent resolution, 133 MB in size.
A very cool find for anyone's collection.
